Salieri: The Landlady
St John's Smith Square, St John's Church Smith Square, SW1P 3HA , [Venue Details]A delightful operatic comedy marking the 200th anniversary of Salieri’s death.
Since the UK première of Falstaff in 2003, Bampton Classical Opera has demonstrated an enthusiastic affection for the operas of Antonio Salieri, teacher of Beethoven, Schubert and Liszt and once revered across Europe.
In this early and brilliant comedy, La locandiera, the boorish Baron Ripafratta (who definitely prefers dogs to women), finds himself a guest at feisty Mirandolina’s inn and soon discovers what it’s like to be the hunter’s defenceless quarry. Expect hot chocolate, scrambled eggs and general mayhem as the arrogant Baron is reluctantly ‘educated’.
This London première staging of a once hugely successful comedy marks the 200th anniversary of Salieri’s death in 1825. Working with some of the finest young professional singers, Bampton always delights with its superb ensembles, entertaining productions and appealing English translations.
Bampton’s enterprise for operatic rarities has twice taken them to the finals of the International Opera Awards.
Please note that a pre-concert talk will take place 6.00 to 6.30pm, and audience members are warmly invited to attend.
